Best Ways to Soothe Irritation and Nicks After Shaving Your Head

Shaving your head is liberating and can result in a sleek and stylish look, but it requires good technique and attention to detail if you want to avoid the dreaded irritation and nicks that can come with it. Knowing how to take care of your scalp post-shave is crucial. I don’t claim to be an expert yet, but here’s what I do to sooth irritation and handle those annoying nicks.

Cold Water Rinsing

A Refreshing Finish

Cold water rinsing is a simple yet highly effective method to calm your scalp after a shave. As you finish shaving, switch from warm to cold water. The cold water helps close your pores, reducing the chances of irritation. It also constricts the blood vessels, which can minimise bleeding from nicks and cuts. The refreshing splash of cold water can also rejuvenate your scalp, making it feel more comfortable and less inflamed.

The Science Behind It

When you rinse your scalp with cold water, it triggers a degree of vasoconstriction, tightening your skin and reducing redness. This process helps in sealing cuts and preventing bacteria from entering, thereby reducing the risk of infection. The cooling effect also soothes the skin, providing instant relief from any stinging sensation you might be experiencing after your head shave.

Alum Blocks: Nature’s Healing Crystal

What is an Alum Block?

An alum block is a crystal made from potassium alum, a naturally occurring mineral. Used for centuries as a shaving aid, alum blocks are known by shavers around the world for their antiseptic and astringent properties. Rubbing an alum block on your freshly shaved head work wonders for nicks and irritation, and it has become my favourite part of my head shaving routine.

How to Use an Alum Block

After rinsing with cold water, gently glide the alum block over your scalp. You might feel a slight tingling sensation, which is a sign that it’s working. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse off with cold water. The alum block helps to stop bleeding from minor cuts and creates a protective layer over the skin, reducing the risk of infection.

Benefits of Alum Blocks

  • Antiseptic Properties: Alum blocks disinfect the skin, warding off potential infections.
  • Astringent Qualities: The astringent nature tightens the skin, helping to close wounds and minimise irritation.
  • Natural and Chemical-Free: Being a natural mineral, alum blocks are free from harmful chemicals, making them a safe option for most skin types, although you should always test in a small inconspicuous area first, to ensure you don’t have a negative reaction.

Soothing Post-Shave Balms

Why Use a Post-Shave Balm?

Post-shave balms are designed to provide long-lasting relief from irritation. These balms have a soothing and moisturising effect which helps restore the natural barrier of your skin, and are often enriched with ingredients like aloe vera, witch hazel, and tea tree oil, which have anti-inflammatory and calming properties.

Choosing the Right Balm

When selecting a post-shave balm, look for products free from alcohol and harsh chemicals, as these can further dry out and irritate the skin. Opt for ones with natural ingredients and a lightweight formula. Applying a balm right after you finish shaving will help lock in moisture and keep your scalp healthy. Also be sure to check you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients, and follow the instructions on the pack.

How to Apply

After using an alum block and rinsing it off, pat your scalp dry with a clean towel. Take a small amount of post-shave balm and gently massage it into your scalp. The soothing ingredients will work their magic, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and irritation-free.

Extra Tips for a Smooth Scalp

Use a Sharp Razor: Always use a sharp razor to avoid unnecessary nicks and cuts. A dull blade can drag on your skin, causing more harm than good.

Shave with the Grain: Shaving against the grain might give a closer shave, but it also increases the risk of irritation. Go with the grain to be more gentle on your scalp, especially if you still have coarse hair or a lot of growth.

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water. Hydrated skin is less likely to get irritated and heals faster.

Regular Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate your scalp once a week to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.

Mistakes will always happen, and even seasoned head shavers with years of experience will suffer the odd cut every now and then. However, by following these tips, you stand a better chance of enjoying an irritation-free shave almost every time.
