Packing Light: a Week in Shropshire

Last week we were on holiday in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. November holidays usually bring a mix of weather, so it was important to make sure I had flexible pieces that would enable me to cope with everything from heavy rain and near-freezing temperatures to sunny autumn days.

I love to travel light on trips, and aim to pack my clothes into one small suitcase that will fit easily on the overhead storage rack of a train. I like to dress well too, so I chose the following items:

  • Well-worn jeans (M&S)
  • Well-worn chinos (Gap)
  • Three plaid shirts (Barbour, Ben Sherman)
  • Navy Lambswool Sweater (Barbour)
  • Mushroom Shetland ‘Shaggy Dog’ Sweater (Harley of Scotland)
  • Tan Brogues (Loake)
  • Oiled Leather Boots (Dr Martens)
  • Tan Leather Belt (Handmade in Hebden Bridge)
  • Brown Bedale Wax Jacket (Barbour)
  • Brown Detachable Wax Hood (Barbour)
  • Navy G9 Harrington Jacket (Barbour x Baracuta Collab)
  • Navy Tweed Baker Boy Cap (Moon)
  • Navy Carlton Beanie Hat (Barbour)

A couple of days were sunny, and it was mild enough to go out in the Harrington and just a shirt. The evenings were chillier and I usually had to wear a sweater. On the first day we had heavy rain, and there were showers in the afternoon on a couple of other days, so I was glad I had the Bedale and detachable hood to keep me dry.

There was enough flexibility in what I packed for me to look different for six days, and I was happy with my choices. I was a bit Barbour-heavy on the top half some days, but it’s my favourite brand, so I’ll allow myself that.
